How to Choose and Maintain Brake Lathe Clamping Tools

Start with your arbor size. Most Ammco brake lathe setups and compatible machines from Accuturn, Bosch, and Hunter run a 1" arbor. We list interchangeable part numbers on every product page so you can match what is already sitting on your bench instead of guessing. Size your cone adapter range to the center hole diameters you actually service. A standard adapter kit handles the passenger-car work that fills most bays, while light-truck and heavy-duty rotors need a truck set that reaches those larger bores. Cleanliness pays here more than anywhere. Grit trapped between a centering cone and the rotor hub comes back as runout in the cut, so wipe the arbor and adapter faces first. Seat the adapter squarely, add a spacer where you need standoff, and snug the arbor nut until the assembly holds without rocking. A self-aligning spacer squares up hubless rotors that refuse to sit flat. Give your cones and adapters a look for nicks, burrs, and taper wear. Order replacements individually or as a full adapter set, and keep spare silencer bands and repair parts on the shelf so one worn piece never puts your lathe out of service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Brake lathe adapters are the cones, bell clamps, and mounting hardware that hold a rotor or drum on the arbor while you cut. Correct clamping keeps the part concentric so the brake surface comes out true.

A centering cone on each side of the rotor centers it on the arbor. Match the cone range to the center hole diameter, then add a bell clamp to hold it square.

Most of our clamping hardware fits any 1" arbor lathe, which covers common Ammco lathe models along with Accuturn, Bosch, Hunter, and Rels machines. Every listing shows interchangeable part numbers for cross-reference.

The three-jaw quick chuck grips rotors and drums by the center hole and ships with a 5" backing plate and key. It gives you a quick drum-to-rotor changeover without swapping cones between jobs.

Use a spacer to position the rotor away from the arbor head so the cutting tool clears the assembly. A self-aligning spacer adds correction for parts that sit at a slight angle.

A double taper adapter has a cone on each end, so one piece covers two bore ranges. Our five-piece set spans 1.32" to 2.89" on a 1" bore.

Yes. The five-piece truck set covers a 3-7/8" to 6-1/8" range on a 1" bore, which handles most light truck and heavy-duty work.

You can. We sell individual cones, clamps, and spacers alongside 20-piece and 22-piece adapter set options. If you only need the adapter missing from your kit, order it on its own.

Verify the clamp is tight and the faces are clean, then slow the cross feed and drop to a lower speed for the final pass. Silencer bands damp vibration on thin brake rotors.
